There is no offset, partners stand directly in front of eachother. Basic: Leaders and followers parts for the basic are the same, ladies start with the right foot, gentlemen with the left. The pattern goes: side, rock step, side, rock step (etc.). The rhythm for the dance is slow-quick-quick and remains the same for all patterns. Your side step is always on a slow and the rock step is always on the quick-quick. For all of the following patterns leaders and followers will always be rocking back. Open Break to Lady's UAT: Leaders: this pattern is exactly the same as the basic for you! All that changes for you are arms. Let go of your follower with your right hand as you step side-right (slow), both rock back as usual (that is the “open break”)(quick-quick). As you step side-left (slow), lift your left hand (and therefore the follower’s hand) high enough to clear her head. You will rock back (quick-quick) as she turns and collect her with your right hand as you step side-right (slow). When the follower is turning you must maintain contact with her hand but loosen your grip on her fingers so her hand can swivel as she turns. Make sure you bring your hand down again as soon as she’s done turning! Followers: leader will raise your hand as you step side-right. That is the universal signal for “go under this arm, please.” The turn you do here is a simple pivot turn, meaning you stay on one spot and do not travel. As you place your weight on your right foot for that side step (slow) you are still facing your partner; take a step across your right foot with your left foot, turning 90 degrees (quick); replace your weight on your right foot, turning 180 degrees (quick); step side-left (slow) to face your partner again. Alternate UATs: Leaders: this patterns begins just like the normal UAT (above), but do not collect your partner when she has finished turning. Instead, take her hand with your right hand and turn under it on the quick-quick (this is exactly the same turn as the follower’s do in the regular UAT above), step side-left (slow) as you lead her to do a second UAT as you rock back (quick-quick), then collect her on the following side-right (slow). The pattern should be follower turns-leader turns-follower turns. Followers: here you will do your pivot turn (quick-quick), step side (slow) and rock back (quick-quick) as he does his turn, then side again, then turn again. Twist: Leaders: Once again, feet do not change from the basic. Start this pattern by leading an UAT, switching hands as she comes around so that you have a right-to-right and left-to-left hand hold. Your right hands should be on top. In this position, continue to do the basic, opening up slightly more than usual away from your partner on the rock steps. After about 3 or 4 basics you may end the pattern either by simply switching hands back to regular dance position, or by the ever-popular “hair-combing thingie” method (otherwise known as face loops). As you step side-left, raise your right hand above your head and drop her hand so that it slides down your shoulder. This motion should be completed on the rock-step so that as you step side-right you can repeat with your left hand. As soon as your right hand is free replace it on the follower’s back, and as soon as your left hand is free extend it to the followers to resume dance position. Followers: leader will lead UAT, then switch hands and continue doing the basic. When the leader ends it with the face loops, let go of his hands (only when he lets go of yours!) and keep them available for the leader to reach for them to go back into dance position. Cuddle: Leaders: the footwork for this pattern is different than the basic. Once you have gotten into the pattern your footwork will be: rock back on left, feet together, rock back on right, feet together, etc. There are no side-steps for you in this pattern. To get into it from the basic: as you step side-right, slide your right hand down to take follower’s hand—you now have two-hand hold. Rock back on your left, and as you bring your feet together, loop follower’s head with your left hand so that she ends up next to you on your right side. She will be turning to her left, ending up facing the same direction you are. You will rock back on your right with follower in this position, then as you bring your feet together again, lift your left hand again to let the follower out. Repeat like so: rock left, bring her in (feet together), rock right, let her out (feet together), rock left, etc. To end the pattern, let her out and release with your right hand as you rock back on the left, then lead her to do an UAT as you step side-left. Followers: as you rock back on the right the leader will take your left hand so that you are in two-hand hold. As leader loops your head with your right arm take a step toward the leader on your right (slow), pivoting slightly so that you end up facing the same direction as the leader. Rock back on the left, then as the leader lets you out take a step forward on your left, pivoting to face leader for your rock step on your right foot. The pattern will feel like this: rock right (quick quick), forward (slow), rock left (quick quick), forward (slow), etc. When the leader is ready to end it he will release your left hand (your clue!) and lead you to step side-right and do an UAT. |
